Working hard in Togo

family, friends!
this week i learned the importance of hard work, and about the joys of a companionship... Elder Kognani was sick. so on friday we stayed all day at the apartment! I wanted to go out and work, but elder kognani was sick. It made me really mad actually. but i know it wasnt my fault or his fault. joys of a companionship i guess....
One of the things I love about Togo is how open the people are to the gospel. No matter what religion people are, they are willing to talk about the gospel with you. Catholics, baptists, muslim, and even vodo. everyone here loves god. people have pictures of jesus everywhere, and are open about religion. they are "not ashamed of the gospel of jesus christ". This land has been prepared. i can see it. we dont need to find people, people find us. You hear people talk about going door to door, but i have not once done this on my mission.
All is well though with our investigators. we have had a lot of new investigators lately, and its hard to contact all of them in the week, and continue to work with our progressing investigators, and visit the recent converts!!! One of our new investigators is named Edmond. he is togolais that speaks nearly perfect english and is actually more comfortable in english. he is really into his religion. We gave him an english book of mormon.  He didnt want to accept it at first because he didnt know why we need to books that went hand and hand with each other. he believed that it was another book of scripture, but he couldnt understand why we need to books that helped explain each other. elder kognani went on and on about the history of the book of mormon and how it came to be. Edmond was getting mad because He wasnt answering his question. finally he looks at me and starts going off in english for awhiles.elder kognani interrupts him and says "can you speak french so i can understand!" edmond than replies "no, hold on" then he continues. I explained to him that the book of mormon and the bible are here to show us the one correct path. i explained that every church explains the bible in a different way and that the book of mormon helps us see what the one true path is. i then used an analogy about us witnessing a crime and how we need multiple witnesses.
Elder kognani at this point is really annoyed. he said in an annoyed voicze "can you please speak french so i can help you". haha, edmond then turns and says "no; your companion is actually answer my question". haha, awkward. so i continued to teach for a few minutes on the book of mormon, and by the end of it he accepted the book of mormon and said he would begin to study it! yes!
I walked out of that lesson confident of my teaching skills. elder kognani often tells me that im to direct and simple when i teach people, and that i need to not be. i find it funny how he says that, but almost every lessons, our investigator becomes annoyed and wants him to stop talking.
oh the joys of a companionship...
all is great here though, we were supposed to have three baptisms this week, but we've had to push back there baptism dates.
all is well in Togo though!

Eating well in Togo

this is silvie and fiona. silvie cooks for us all the time and we are always at there house having dinner. Silvie was a missionary for 17 years with the jehovahs witnesses when one morning she woke up and left the church. we actually just ate at her house. it was really good.

A spiritual experience in Togo

I have seen how the gospel of jesus christ has blessed the lives of members. People here do not have a lot of money. Elder kognani and i bought an english bible, book of mormon, doctrine and covenats, and pearl of great price for a member from
Sierra Leon. I have never seen someones face smile so much. The member was so happy to finally have the scriptures, in a language that she could understand. I have always known the scriptures were important, and i knew they brought joy to our lives.... but words can not describe the joy that that young mother had when she saw her own pair of scriptures.

Alex's first baptism

family!!!!! friends.
wow productive week! really stressful.... last week i had the idea to hold a baptismal service here at the church in kodjoviakope so we spent a lot of week planning and inviting people to prepare for this baptismal service!! and it was a success!!!! when we arrived though to start preparing the baptismal service the baptismal font was over flowing with water.so elder potter and i grabbed buckets and started emptying it out... great work out. the servcice was awesome though, elder kognani and i were able to baptize our investigator luc, the eight year old boy whos sister is a member. we also had one of elder potter and elder gnamniens investigator baptized!!!! it was awesome. we honestly thought that it was going to be a disaster and it wasnt!!!! the lord realy wanted this baptism to happen! a lot of members came, and a lot of our investigators as well!!!! It was so exciting!!!
on sunday i got ot watch one session of general conference, it was the sunday morning session. it was awesome! they talked a lot on sustaining prophets!!!!! the problem is that they dont tell us when we are going to watch general conference, so when we invite people to church and then general conference is playing, our investigators have a lot of questions... thankfully though, we had the cds and were able to tell most of them.
We have a lot of new investigators, and most of them were able to come to the baptismal service. we should be hiolding another service the 15th and the 22nd!!! so we are staying super busy with all of our investigators.
ok, this just happened. as im writting this email, the power cut out, thank goodness that our email has auto save!!!!
anyways, before i was interrupted by togos power problem, i was going to explain how i have never gone door to door. nope, we actually have so many investigators that all of our time slots are filled up. haha, so we dont ever just walk around! its awesome.
really busy and crazy week. elder potter is happy to be going home soon. he is leaving me his washboard and laundry bag plus some other usefull african survival stuff....
great week though. thanks for all of the letters and for all of your love and support.

Still in Togo under the rain

another week in togo

AttachmentsOct 27 (2 days ago)
family, and friends,
another week in hot, humid, rainy Togo.
This week was really productive. on wednesday i went on splits with Elder Potter, i learned a new teaching style with him, and got to meet with some members ive never met before. Elder Potter and i get a long great. we have similar personalities, and sense of humor. i've learned so much about the african culture with him, and its awesome. He showed me a vodo shrine that we found on the beach, and a self proclaimed vodo house thats in his secteur. On the way back to the apartment, we stopped at a fufu bar and got fufu, with a fish sauce. it was really good. fufu is so much better than pate. by the way a fufu bar is like an african mcdonalds. you buy the fufu, and then they have these huge bowls of different soups and sauces.it was way good.
thursday we had a meeting with président morin and all of the other missionaries who are in training. he wanted to here what we liked and didnt like about training. he then gave us some ideas on how we can improve training and ideas on how we can make it more interesting for all of us.
then there was saturday. i dont know why heavy rainstorms love saturdays. so here is the story. It was a beautiful hot saturday. Elder kognani and I left the apartment and began teaching Saulime, one of the investigators we have been working with. As she was reading Matthew 6 on prayer, people started packing up there things and running around everywhere. then it was instantly dark, and the wind had suddenly picked up. thats when the rain started coming down hard! We stood up and told saulime to go home because of the rain, and then we left to go and find cover. and we couldnt find any! so there we were, two missionaries soaked to the bone walking around in togo, laughing. we couldnt believe what had happened.
on sunday i taught primary again with elder potter. After church the group president came up to me and handed me the cds from this past general conference. super random. he told me to bring them to church next week. so... i have general conf. in my apartment. im tempted to watch them...
then today, elder potter gave me a haircut. but the guide to the buzzers fell off as he was giving me a hair cut, and left a massive bald spot on my head.ladies and gentlemen. i have a random bald spot on my head.
so this was my week. really busy, and productive.
i love it here in africa so much. it is super exciting here. i hope you are all staying safe. i think of you all eveyday!

October 20, 2014 Still in togo

family! friends! fellow yovos! afon ya dea? eh, efon ya dé! Fé ké youma?
haha, ohh man! this week was not as exciting as last week... all though the power did go out again on tuesday, but thats a weekly thing.... it was hot this week! my face is red!
so yesterday the primary teacher didnt want to go to church, so elder potter and i taught primary... and the young woman teacher had malaria and was unable to go to church so we had the young women help us teach primary.
church is a disaster. after sacrament, everyone goes home. seriously. only the investigators, primary children, youngwomen, and english speakers say. everyone else goes home because they are mad that they dont have three hours of church!
ive started a young mens class because the youngmen are stuck in primary, or they just go home. we've also begun teaching institute, and taking charge of the monday night actitivities... we arent a branch. we are a group. which means we arent big enough to be a branch. so where is our group president? on a boat in gabon... where hes been for the last six months. so the missionaries are doing everything. we have a high councilmen as the leader but the poor guy has only been a member for a year, and doesnt know what is going on.
so, church is fun.
sunday we went to go teach an inactive member... the inactive member lives in the same house as my crazy nigerian friend. when we got there, we asked if yommy was there. they said that he "had a revelation and needed to go the ivory coast" and that he left that morning. instead i taught another man from ghana.
im teaching so much in english. we are so close to ghana that im teaching a lot of people who speak english. elder potter was telling me that there is a trail that takes us into ghana in his are.... but its weird because its a road that takes us from his area to our area, so we can take it, and be in ghana.
nothing too crazy happened this week, except for the sun here is hot... and its not even the hot dry season... thats in about two months. so lookng forward to that.
i hope you are all staying safe, i love you all, and pray for you guys daily!
